I always saw this album like Citizen Kane. Something that you should experience because it is important and something that your sopposed to like for the same reason. In fact after repeated listens, it is quite clear why this is the greatest jazz album ever made. Miles assigned different modes of a scale to the players and layed out the basic line. After that it just all came together. The melodies that Miles created were perfect for this excercise and the players were right for the parts. Everything just works. You can keep listening to this record and it keeps giving. Something that a great jazz record has to do.
